No. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is a federal database that’s used to check if potential gun buyers qualify to purchase, acquire, or possess a firearm. As stated on the FBI website: “The NICS is not to be used to establish a federal firearm registry. Information about an inquiry resulting in a firearms receipt or transfer is destroyed, per NICS regulations.”

- California requires all assault weapons and .50-caliber rifles to be registered.
- Connecticut requires all assault weapons and large-capacity magazines to be registered.
- District of Columbia and Hawaii require all firearms to be registered.
- Maryland requires all pistols to be registered.
- Michigan requires a local license to accompany any pistol purchase. That license information is then kept on the state’s pistol entry database.
- New Jersey requires all assault weapons to be registered.
