You’ll notice that many of our gun cabinets are available in a few different types of wood: oak, maple, and cherry. What’s the difference in these wood varieties besides the color, you may ask? Well, not all wood is created equal, and today we want to delve into what makes each type of wood we use unique.
Oak
Oak is one of the most durable types of wood available for furniture construction. It is well-known for its very grainy look and has two distinct varieties: red oak, which can range from a light brown all the way to a pink-red hue, and white oak, which has a sort of tiger-stripe grain. Oak is a very distinctive wood because of its wavy grain; choosing a clear finish is a great way to highlight the grain and the natural color of the wood. However, if you choose to stain an oak cabinet a different color, beware of overly-darkening the wood, which can exaggerate the grain and make the cabinet appear two-toned rather than uniformly dark.
Maple
Maple is a beautiful light-colored hardwood that occasionally has a natural reddish tinge to it. It is one of the most affordable types of wood, as well as one of the most durable. Many of our gun cabinets that are built from maple are passed down through generations while maintaining their beautiful look.

Cherry is one of the finest woods we offer for our gun cabinets, and it’s easy to see its value. Cherry is well-known for its fine, straight grain that can range from reddish-brown to a blond color. Because of its grain, cherry is easily shaped and often used for carved styles.
